MILLERSVILLE, Md. - Officials with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department say a 45-year-old injured in a fire on Wood Street in the Anne Arundel Gardens area of the county was hurt as he attempted to rescue his neighbor from the flames.
The man was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma with serious injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Pulled from the fire was the 51-year-old homeowner, who was rushed to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center with life-threatening injuries.
Officials say the fire was reported in the rear of the home when crews arrived on the scene following calls at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening. Twenty-seven firefighters battled smoke and flames to gain control by 7:40 p.m.
Investigators say the home was equipped with working smoke alarms and the estimated total damages are $11,000. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
