Two Anne Arundel County K9 dogs will be outfitted with brand new protective vests thanks to a donation from a Massachusetts-based non-profit.

Leo, a 2-year-old German Shepherd-Belgian Melinois mix, and a 3-year-old Belgian Melinois named Erby, will receive the bullet and stab protective gear from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., an organization that gives custom-made body armor to law enforcement dogs.

Police say K9 Leo's vest will be embroidered with the words, "For your safety as you serve,” while K9 Erby's vest will sport the sentiment, "Gifted by Friends of Dogwood Acres Pet Retreat.”

The organization provides body armor worth more than $2000 to dogs actively employed in the states, keeping dogs like Leo, who likes to play fetch, and Erby, who police say has a strong dislike for suspects on the run, safe from harm.

The group has donated more than 1,700 vests in 49 states since its inception in 2009.
