Four dead in fiery head-on crash

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - It is tough to distinguish the front end from the bumper of the black car.  The silver vehicle is also in pieces.

Anne Arundel County Police say the head-on collision ended with one car on fire and overturned.  Both vehicles had two people inside.  Three adults and one child, age five or younger, died at the scene.

Marley Neck Blvd in Glen Burnie was shut down for about five hours.  People in the area stopped, anxiously awaiting any news.

"A friend of mine and my cousin live right where the accident happened.  And I can't get through to them on the phone," said Amber Decker, who lives nearby.

That horrible feeling went on through the night.  The investigation ruled out original reports of a fifth victim.

"They accounted for four persons at the beginning of the accident.  There was a child safety seat involved.  They thought maybe there was another child involved, but they have since confirmed that was not the case," said Lt. Francis Tewey, Anne Arundel Co. Police spokesman.

Police do not think drugs or alcohol played a role, but drivers familiar with Marley Neck Blvd. say it's often used to drag race.

"I've actually encountered that myself several times.  Somebody in front of me is going 20 mph and the next one wants to go 70 mph and they'll pass them on a double yellow line," said Jack Hedges, who lives nearby.

Police have not released the identities of the victims.
