One firefighter was hurt early Friday morning while battling a two-alarm fire at Coconut Charlie's restaurant in Pasadena.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said the fire started around 3 a.m. at 9129 Fort Smallwood Road. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the building's attic.
Lieutenant Charles D. Fowler IV with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department confirmed the firefighter was on a ladder near an attic window when neighbors say a fireball flashed through, knocking him down.
The neighbors and owner of the bar said the firefighter burned his ears.
Fowler said he was cleared on scene and returned to work.
The fire caused partial roof damage, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the bar. Owner Chris Welsh said they have insurance and hope to rebuild as soon as possible.
Welsh said he was very concerned about the firefighter who was injured, after watching it happen in front of him, comparing it to something out of Backdraft.
Welsh said they were preparing to celebrate the bar's 9th anniversary, on August 4th and had a charity fundraising event this Sunday for a community member who has breast cancer.
Now they're working to pick up the pieces and start over.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
