ANNAPOLIS, Md. - UPDATE: The Anne Arundel County Health Department says a sanitarian did an inspection of the Starbucks location this afternoon and found no evidence of pest problems or contaminated food product.
A customer at an Annapolis Starbucks location claims drinks he purchased for his family were infested with bugs.
According to a post made on Facebook , Casey Cook says hot beverages he bought for his wife and sons during their trip to pick up a Christmas tree Friday contained the pests. That post, which contains a picture of insects floating in a beverage, now has more than 5,600 shares on the social media website.
Cook tells ABC2 he spoke with the Anne Arundel County Health Department to file a complaint. A spokeswoman for the department says they will dispatch a sanitarian to check out the establishment.
The manager at the Starbucks location on the unit block of Church Circle where Cook says the bugs were found directed us to the company's corporate office for comment. A company representative contacted us by phone this afternoon, saying they're aware of the complaint and have made an apology to the customer. She tells ABC2, "The safety of our customers is of the utmost importance. We are doing a thorough investigation of this customer's claim and hope to have the opportunity to serve him again."
ABC2 Investigators obtained copies of the coffee shop's inspection reports from the Anne Arundel County Health Department. That Starbucks location has been inspected three times in 2013, once in August and twice in March. No pest violations were cited during any of those inspections. In their most recent inspection on Aug. 28, the store was not cited for any critical item violations or any violations for what the department calls "Good Retail Practices".
