Casino employment center opens offering 15 hundred jobs

More than 1,500 positions open

HANOVER, Md. - Sarah Coleman is living out a common headline in this economy.

A mother of two she's been unemployed, making whatever ends she can find meet and trying to find a job for two years.

"It's been hard, luckily my boyfriend works so that helps out a little bit but it's still not enough."

You hear stories like Sarah's all up and down the line outside and in the recruitment center for the upcoming Maryland Live Casino near Arundel Mills Mall.

The hiring center in Hanover is the hub at which the casino hopes to fill 15 hundred positions.

Monday, there was a wait at each of the computer terminals where the mostly unemployed click and type their way into a database to be considered for both salaried and hourly positions.

"This is the most exciting part of the project.  We're looking for dynamic people who are going to get charged up coming to work every day," said Maryland Live Casino's Joe Weinberg.

Coming to work everyday should not be a problem for many of the applicants jammed into the center Monday afternoon.

The Cordish Company believes they have a very talented applicant pool eager to contribute and are well aware of what the possibility of a job means to many here.

"We're dealing with people who are out of work or underemployed on a daily basis so we really understand what people are going through," said Weinberg.

And The Cordish Company feels good in ending that pain for at least 15 hundred Marylanders; a hiring process that started in earnest today, but will last through the spring.

"It would mean the world, like they don't understand how much I need it [the job]," said Coleman.

Sarah hoping to be one of the 15 hundred hired, pinning her odds on the area's newest casino.

Maryland Live Casino says it will open sixty percent of its facility by June then the rest of it by October.
