PASADENA, Md. -
The Firearm Safety Act of 2013 made it out of a combined committee late Friday evening without many significant changes.
The democrats behind this bill consider that a victory, but know if passed into law it won't apply until October 1
st; a window some legislators think could create a run on assault rifles more than doubling the amount already legally owned in this state.
"If people are purchasing them at a rate of let's say 7000 a month which is conservative, we might actually have as of October 1st over 100 thousand assault weapons in the state which will be grandfathered in and which will be legal," Montgomery County Delegate Luiz Simmons said during the hearing.
Frank Loane is right in the middle of that loop hole; he owns Pasadena Pawn and Gun in Anne Arundel County.
Business started to pick up a few months ago when the gun debate started and feels it will only get heavier as the bill in Annapolis makes its way to the governor's desk.
"Yes, we've had several people come in and said I've thought about it for a while, I might not be able to get it so I want to get it now," said Loane.
And you have to look no further than the wall of clipboards in the back of his shop holding hundreds of applications waiting for the rubber stamp from the Maryland State Police.
Before this debate started, it would only be about 10 at any given time, now he is up to 220.
Such a jump Loane had to hire an extra body to help process all the applications.
Customers getting a call from Loane's shop today applied for their gun on February 8
th, proof of a near two month backlog.
One this gun store owner thinks will only get worse as the general assembly works to put an expiration date on the legal purchase of assault weapons and large ammunition clips.
Next up, the Firearm Safety Act of 2013 is headed for debate on the house floor.
If passed there, a brief stop back in the senate and a good possibility it lands on the governor's desk by the end of this current session.
