When it's this hot in the Eastport Terrace neighborhood, there's nowhere to hide.

"Here, everybody was outside," says 20-year-old Dajuan Gay. "Because it's cooler outside than it is inside."

Gay is home from college on summer break and doesn't have central air. He says not many homes do in the public housing community.

After watching elderly and disabled neighbors struggle in the high temperatures, Gay decided to do something about it.

"It's not in me to see people hurting, and without, and turn a blind eye," he says.

Thursday, Gay started a Fundly page, raising money to buy neighbors A/C units. In one day, he raised $4,000 and received several donations of used A/C units.

"The community just jumped at it and we had people dropping off air conditioning units," he said. "Last night, we had people go to Home Depot and buy three air conditioning units and two fans."

He says the most gratifying part has been the deliveries.

Neighbor Thelma Jackson was overjoyed. Her 2nd floor has been getting as hot as 87 degrees even with a window unit downstairs. She says her and her children have trouble sleeping when its this hot.

"I'm glad because it will cool us off," said Jackson. "I don't have to keep going downstairs and sucking the air back up, then going back upstairs."

According to Gay, other communities have been reaching out to get involved. The fundraiser has now made about $5,200.
