Red, white and blue is being displayed everyone in Annapolis for Independence Day, and for good reason.
Annapolis was once the nation’s capital from 1783 to 1784, and General George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in the town’s State House.
These are just a few examples of why Annapolis is one of the most historic cities in Maryland, and why thousands come to celebrate Independence Day in this town.
Mayor Mike Pantelides said there’s no better way to do that than with a parade.
"We have a great parade, it starts at 6:30 p.m. We probable got close to 75 floats coming in,” he said. “It showcases everything, so we are very excited."
The parade is scheduled to go down West Street, then onto Church Circle and down Main Street to City Dock. After the parade, the annual fireworks show kicks off at 9:15 p.m.
Mayor Patelides said the parade, “goes on for about 45 minutes, so it's a little longer than your average show. It's the same people who always do it and they put on a great event for us.”
Besides seeing the fireworks from all over town, you can even come by boat to watch. The city also has free parking and shuttle service from the state employee lot at the stadium, Gate 6 at the academy, the DNR parking lot, as well as the Calvert street garage.
Lewis Dowle is British, from the very country we declared independence from 241 years ago but, that won’t stop him from getting caught up in the holiday as he visits friends in Annapolis for the first time.
"This is an amazing town,” Dowle said. “I love kind of seeing everything. It's got quite a European feel to it, such history, see the water in the background. Obviously being here on the 4th of July is super special. Seeing all the US flags and patriotism. It's great to see our allies celebrate their independence."
