If you’re looking for some fun this weekend, why not go by the grand opening of the Senior Dog Sanctuary in Severn?

The cutting-edge safe haven for older dogs was a dream of Val Lynch, who knew he liked dogs when he brought home his first one at 8-years-old. “My mother wasn’t crazy about that but, she let me keep the dog,” he recalls. “On the other hand, she wasn’t too happy when I brought the third dog home.”

Now Val and his staff welcome dogs in everyday. Not just any dogs, but senior dogs.

The sanctuary has been open for a few months but they will have their grand opening Sunday in Severn. The sanctuary specializes in rehabbing dogs that are lost, abandoned, sick, abused, homeless and older. For many of these dogs, the sanctuary is the difference between life and death.

Lynch says everyone should own a puppy once but, more mature dogs have a lot to offer.

“Typically they are house broken, typically they've been through tough times and good times and they know the difference. They are full of love and affection.”

The dogs get plenty of care at the facility that holds up to 23 animals. It even has it’s own Astroturf designed especially for the furry residents.

The ultimate goal is to care for  older dogs until they can be adopted.

“Some of them have had a really hard past and to know that they have a bed to go home in, to be able to sleep next to somebody. It means the world to them,” says Lynch.
