Two Southwest Airlines flights landed at BWI after reporting potential mechanical problems, according to an airport spokesman.

The two inbound aircraft had "precautionary alerts" declared because of the possible issues, according to Jonathan Dean, BWI spokesman.

Southwest Airlines flight 604 was headed from Philadelphia to Phoenix when a cockpit indication light went off. The captain declared an emergency and the plane was diverted to Baltimore where it landed safely, according to a Southwest Airlines spokeswoman.

A total of 143 passengers and five crew members continued on a different plane Phoenix and the original plane was taken out of service for review.

Flight 281 from Baltimore to Boston returned to BWI shortly after takeoff because of a cockpit indication light. The captain didn't declare an emergency and the plane landed safely.

"Out of an abundance of caution, local authorities met the aircraft upon landing," the Southwest spokeswoman said in an email.

The 135 passengers and five crew members continued to Boston on a separate plane. The original aircraft was taken out of service for review.

Dean said airport operations were normal as before 7 p.m.
