Halloween isn't a normal day for most students, who usually go to school with their backpacks and notebooks dressed as their favorite character.

But the principal at Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring canceled Halloween.

Dr. Melissa Brunson said each year a group of students opt out of the Halloween festivities mostly because of religious reasons. In an effort to not leave anyone out, the school didn't allow any costumes and the traditional parade had been called off.

But a group of 5th grade parents are fighting back. They signed their kids out of school early and held a Halloween party and parade at a park right next to the school.

The school made it very clear that any child attending the off school party will receive an unexcused absence.
