People with disabilities have to face challenges everyday and with just over a month to election day, they want to make sure their voices are heard.
More than 30 people with physical, intellectual, mental and developmental disabilities rallied together Wednesday at McKeldin Plaza in downtown Baltimore before beginning a march to Washington, D.C.
The event is called "Field of Power: Disability Vote March." Organizers said the disability vote is not always heard and this march will help those with disabilities get out and vote.
"Every vote can make a difference," said march event organizer John Sorensen. "We're encouraging people with disabilities, particularly, to get out and make your voice heard."
However, it is not that simple. Accessibility to polling stations, help in and out of the voting booth and misunderstandings of disability needs can deter voters, organizers said.
"Each State has a disability law, organization and they're working to assure accessibility to voting," Sorensen said. "We certainly encourage people with disabilities to support that work to make sure they're actually able to vote."
The group will march five miles a day and will finish at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Sept. 25.
The event is sponsored by ADAPT and is working with partner organizations in the disability community.
