Teacher Files Charges Against Student

BALTIMORE - An art teacher at Reginald F. Lewis High School, who was attacked by a student in her classroom April 4 and the incident was recorded on another student's cell phone camera, has filed criminal charges against the student she says attacked her.Jolita Berry, 30, said Wednesday night that she did not want other teachers to undergo what she has gone through.A spokeswoman for the city state's attorney's office confirmed that Berry filed second-degree assault charges against the girl with the Department of Juvenile Services. The juvenile system will interview the girl and determine whether to forward the case to prosecutors in the state's attorney's office.Berry was attacked by a student in her classroom April 4. A video that was aired on television shows a teenage girl beating a woman lying on the floor while classmates cheer.The cell phone video of the Lewis attack has circulated on the Internet.Berry has nightmares about the incident but was reluctant to file charges because she worried about retaliation from the school system and others in the community.(Story from The Baltimore Sun - click on link to the left for the entire story.)
