City Officials Respond

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon today responded to claims that the weekend arrest of Ravens rookie Anthony Fein was a case of police profiling.

"I don't believe that is the case and i won't accept that in this case at all,"  Dixon said.

Fein reportedly was eating at Johnny Rockets in the Light Street Pavilion yesterday when security officers thought they saw Fein passing a gun to a friend.

It was actually a cell phone.

When confronted by police, charging documents say the football player shoved the officer.  Fein was then arrested and booked.

But in published reports -- Fein's agent, an attorney named Milton Dee Hobbs out of Memphis, Tennessee -- says his client was profiled by police.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, however, says Fein invited a problem.

"The information i have at this point even though it is under investigation is that he did not adhere to the command of the police," Guglielmi said.

Security is tighter at the Inner Harbor following the previous weekend's shooting at the same general location.  Following that incident, both the mayor and police commissioner called for more aggressive policing.  But both say this incident is not related to that directive.

Fein was released on his own recognizance.  His trial date is set for October 7.

Agent: Fein Was Profiled

The agent for Baltimore Ravens undrafted rookie Tony Fein says the linebacker's weekend arrest in Baltimore was the result of police profiling.

Fein was arrested and charged Sunday with assaulting a police officer.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says Fein was eating at Johnny Rockets when a security officer thought he saw him pass a handgun to a friend. It turned out to be a cell phone.

Guglielmi says that when police questioned Fein, he became belligerent and shoved the officer.

But Fein's agent, Milton Dee Hobbs, says it was the officer who was aggressive and that Fein didn't shove him. Hobbs says police approached Fein because he was a black man wearing a sweat suit and hoodie.

Hobbs also says Fein has never owned a weapon.

Baltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Tony Fein was arrested Sunday at the Inner Harbor after an altercation with police.

Police say that Fein and several friends, whose names are not being released, were eating dinner at the Harbor when security officers thought they saw Fein give one of his friends a gun.

When police arrived they discovered it was not a gun, but a cell phone being passed.  Police began to question Fein and they say he became agitated and shoved an officer.

"One of the subjects resisted police and became belligerent.  The sergeant approached him and asked him to standup again.  He resisted, stood up, and pushed the officer in the chest.  the officer fell down.  Other officers restrained that gentleman and took him into custody," said police spokesman Anthony Gugliemi.

Fein was arrested and has been charged with assaulting a police officer.  He is being held at Central Booking.

Fein joined the Ravens this season after being signed as a rookie free agent.  He attended University of Mississippi and served in the War in Iraq.
