Police Find 15 Illegal Immigrants in Van

Last Update: 10/24/2008 2:27 pm

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say 15 Hispanic men suspected of immigration violations have been turned over to federal authorities after they were found traveling in a van on Interstate 81 near Hagerstown.

State police spokeswoman Elena Russo says a trooper stopped the 7-year-old Dodge Caravan just south of the U.S. Route 40 interchange Thursday evening because it was following another vehicle too closely.

Russo says the van was being driven from Texas to New York by Abdencio Torres, a permanent resident alien who could not produce a green card.

Police described the 14 passengers as illegal immigrants.
