Don’t lose hope.
From now through Sunday, bargain hunters from Baltimore to St. Louis will be able to cash in along a piece of history.
The longest yard sale in the country will draw people to the Historic National Road, Route 40, searching for deals.
Historic Ellicott City is trying to cash in on the nation’s largest yard sale.
"With the price of gas, people are rethinking how they travel, where they travel," said Lee Doll, as he stood behind an idle cash register at Cottage Antiques, “A few months ago, we would have three, four people working on the weekends, and now I’ve worked several Saturdays alone.”
In fact, Doll says a half dozen surrounding businesses have closed in recent months.
The 5th Annual National Road Yard may bring relief... stretching 824 miles along the nation’s first interstate highway.
Already, merchants in other states like Ohio and Indiana have began setting up tables and making sales, while business owners in Hagerstown, Frederick and New Market get ready to join the fray on Saturday.
"It'll be dawn to dusk and some antiques... you know, this is the antiques capitol of Maryland," said Jane Rossig of New Market’s historic Strawberry Inn.
Whether it’s a piece of history or a hidden treasure, you may be able to find it a few miles (or a few hundred)... just down the road.
"I love second-hand things,” said Gail Jothen of Phoenix as she perused shops in Ellicott City, “It's more fun, than the new stuff."
