Sen. Benjamin Cardin says an agreement has been reached to clean up pollution at Fort Meade in Anne Arundel County.
The agreement Cardin announced Monday includes the Environmental Protection Agency, the Defense Department and the Interior Department. Cardin says they have signed a federal facilities agreement to remediate the Superfund sites on or near the Army base.
The formal agreement comes after nine years of discussions. Cardin says it recognizes the EPA as the main arbiter and creates a framework for the Army to finish remaining clean up work.
A 1990s evaluation at Fort Meade revealed a list of pollution from solvents, pesticides, PCBs, heavy metals, waste fuels and waste oils left there by the military over the years. Fort Meade was designated a Superfund site in 1998.
