Baltimore, Md. (September 26, 2009) - A vehicle erupted into flames after it was hit by a tractor trailer on I-95 early Saturday morning.
Around 2:30 a.m. the Baltimore City Fire Department responded to interstate I-95 Southbound at 395 North for a report of an automobile accident. Upon arriving on the scene they found a small compact car fully involved with flames after being struck by a tractor trailer.
The first responders immediately requested a rescue assignment after identifying that people were trapped. They quickly performed a rapid attack to suppress the fire and perform rescue efforts to free the victims.
There was an adult male, adult pregnant woman and male child trapped in the vehicle. The child who was found trapped in the rear of the car suffered serious second and third degree burns to his torso, neck and face along with other injuries.
A rapid trauma assessment was performed by paramedics identified that the child still had vital life signs. He was quickly extricated, had advanced trauma life support measures performed and transported to Johns Hopkins Children's Center for further assessments and treatment for his injuries.
No updates on the victim's conditions or identification had been made at this time, however, they were believed to be a family.
The driver of the tractor trailer reportedly suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
Exactly what caused this accident had not yet been determined. Police officers from the Maryland Transportation Authority are actively engaged in performing an investigation.
