Update
A boat is brought back to the surface after a fatal collision. Just after 6 o’clock Sunday evening, two small boats, one 14 feet and the other 16 feet, crashed in Marley Creek.
“Apparently, they went out fishing and another friend of mine, their boats hit,” said Ray Banton, the victim’s friend.
The Department of Natural Resources Police says one boat carried two people, a father and daughter. The other had one man, who died at the scene. People at the scene say the three people knew each other well.
“Witnesses stating it was an approaching situation where two vessels were approaching each other prior to the impact,” said Sgt. Aruthur Windemuth, Maryland Natural Resources Police.
Both boats were submerged under water at the time of the accident. A number of passing boats stopped to help before the Coast Guard, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, and DNR arrived.
People familiar with the crash site say it’s proven dangerous.
“Where Marley Creek and Furnace Creek meet, it’s pretty dangerous. They should probably put a speed limit there because I’m on my jet ski all the time and people take it real sharp and I see people almost collide,” said boater Christopher Kohwly.
The victim has not been identified, but he is described as an adult male in his mid 40’s.
John Martins, 42, and his daughter, 13-year-old Lauren Martins, of Glen Burnie, suffered minor injuries; they are cooperating with investigators.
Late Sunday night, the boats were towed to storage where investigators will examine them.
