Cecil County Woman Will Keep House Full Of Cats For Now

Reported by: Roosevelt Leftwich
Last Update: 6/29 11:11 pm
Janice Brant says it was just a big miss understanding.

She doesn't have 200 cats in her house.

Just a few shy of 60.

'If I had 200 cats I would be gone....I have approximately 57 adults.' Brant says.

Brant says she had a falling out with a former housemate who she says called the Cecil County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

They've been at her house off and on since last Friday....and her house passed muster from county housing inspectors.

There are cats in the living room, on top of the fridge, in all the bedrooms, including a kitten room, and a shed and old RV with quarantined cats inside.

There is no law in Cecil County that defines how many cats you can have in your house.....but she did have to clean things up.

'That's not a little bit overwhelming for you...it's overwhelming when you have them in the house but I was told that I couldn't use the garage because the shed I had in the middle of the winter when it's 30 degrees what do you do.' Brant says.

‘I want to show so people don’t' get this demented view now don't die on me cat.’ Brant says while she wrapped a cat in a towel to show how she stored them. ‘Look at this bundle now what is that? Okay I just put them you wouldn't know what that is but it's wrapped up in a chucks all tightly wrapped.’

Brant says the 23 cats had died of natural causes and she froze them to store them until she could take them to a shelter in Delaware to be cremated.

But she admits she got a little behind.

Brant says she would never do anything to harm an animal her intent is to help them.

‘I'm an animal lover I just can't stand seeing an animal hurt accusing me of hurting an animal this is what I do this is my social life I don't drink I don’t' smoke, my money is spent on animals.' Brant says.

Brant says she will continue to go out and rescue animals.

And she says if she can fit more in, she will.

In a statement released late this afternoon...the Cecil SPCA says that all of the animals appeared in what they're calling 'adequate medical condition.'

However they did require that Brant clean up animal feces and urine on floors and she complied.

They say they will continue to monitor her make-shift shelter.
