The new Royal Farms on Eastern Boulevard in Bowleys Quarters is certainly convenient for drivers, except perhaps the drivers who will be parking across the street at Bengie's Drive-In Theater. The owner said the lights are not only a violation, they ruin the movie watching experience.
We met with D. Vogel Wednesday after the sun set. He played a short film on the big screen. It was easy to see the Royal Farms fluorescents beaming in the background. “Right where you're at in your immediate vision is the Farm store and further in the back of the drive in," said D. Vogel.
In fact because of the bright distraction, Vogel postponed the season opener March 13th. “It's actually heartbreaking because it never should have happened," he said. Vogel and his attorney have been battling this issue since 2003 when they first learned of the plans. They hoped to change the signage and shield the lights like his other well-lit neighbors McDonald’s and Walmart. But his efforts failed and though attorney's for Royal Farms said they are up to code, to Vogel - it's a violation. “It may be appropriate to what a Farm store is, but it certainly is inappropriate parked next to the Bengie's Drive-In Theater," he said.
Royal Farms has already removed the spot lights surrounding its roof as a compromise, but Vogel's not budging because he said this battle is about saving, “this wonderful piece of roadside America…trouble is I don't want to save it, I want to enjoy it. I want it to be here and enjoy it as well." Enjoy it without the distraction that could drive customers away.
County officials reportedly said the lights are not in violation but Vogel is not giving up. Still, he hopes to reopen by April 10th with limited seating.
