The U.S. economy took another hit when AT&T announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs. This is 4 percent of its workforce.
The Dallas-based communications company said the job cuts will take place in December and throughout 2009. The company also plans to reduce capital spending next year.
AT&T employs nearly 300 people at its Wireless Division's Regional Headquarters in Anne Arundel County. A company spokesman said the layoffs will be across the company and across the country.
The spokesperson would not specify what cities and departments would be most impacted. AT&T provides local phone coverage in Texas, California and 20 other states.
The company has seen a loss of customer base with people opting from landline phones to wireless service.
