One person dies every 40 seconds from suicide.
The World Health Organization estimates over 800,000 people die by suicide each year.
Over 40,000 Americans take their own lives each year and for every suicide 25 people attempt it.
It is the 10th leading cause of death in the country and costs $44 billion annually.
Saturday September 10th was World Suicide Prevention Day.
This year's theme is connect, communicate and care.
These three words are at the heart of suicide prevention.
Doctor Drew Pate is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist at Sheppard Pratt Health System and joins us today to talk more about a growing problem.
