Since the Department of Justice released its findings into the Baltimore Police Department, groups from all over Maryland have dug into the report.
The National Disability Rights Network and Disability Rights Maryland found that the department needs to improve in several areas related to people with disabilities, not just people of color.
Police didn't provide basic reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities. In addition, they didn't use common de-escalation techniques on people in crisis, instead officers used excessive force, which sometimes resulted in hospitalization or death.
The report found officers need better training on the types of disabilities they might encounter. Baltimore Police has not sought experts who could help with training.
The disability rights groups hope people with disabilities will be heard during the department's efforts to improve.
