Baltimore County parents are outraged, saying overcrowded school busses are unacceptable.
Leah Runaldue's 11-year-old daughter attends Perry Hall Middle School, and says she's not happy about what she's hearing about the bus rides.
"Kids sitting on the floor, kids standing, kids are being squeezed into seats,” she said. “Then they go over jumps or go over rocky roads they're falling onto the floor."
Runaldue says it's been an issue for years, and many parents are frustrated.
County Councilman David Marks calls it a safety issue.
"Parents should expect that their children can go to and from school in safety," Marks said.
He tells ABC 2 News he has been in direct contact with school officials and they are taking action.
"We can't have students sitting on the floor, falling out of seats, it's no way that's safe," said Julie Henn with the Northeast Area Educational Advisory Council.
She says she plans to stay on top of parents' concerns, and has also heard from the BCPS Office of Transportation.
"Their office is working very hard to distribute the load of students across busses, there are additional busses here today at the school, they sent overflow busses in, the area supervisor is on site to monitor the loading of busses this afternoon."
"It just needs to be addressed and taken care of so that we know that our children are taken care of and safe going to and from school," Runaldue said.
We went to the bus stop Runaldue's daughter gets dropped off at, and we're told no students were forced to sit on the floor for the ride home Thursday.
School District Officials tell us bus routes and the number of buses needed has to be ironed out at the start of every school year. Additional buses will be used so there is room for every student riding, until permanent adjustments are in place.
