Baltimore County board votes to keep school open on Muslim holidays

The Baltimore County Board of Education voted Tuesday to keep schools open on Muslim holidays.

The move to close schools failed one by vote.

For years, the Muslim community has advocated for the two most important Muslim holy days to be designated as school holidays.

Earlier this year, Montgomery County and Howard County schools decided to move their professional development days for teachers to one of those holidays.

But Muslim leaders are disappointed that their holidays aren't being recognized.

 And other major cities have chosen to recognize Muslim holidays, including New York.
