Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson was in Baltimore working to reduce lead in homes.
Carson was in town to check on the progress of the HUD lead-based paint hazard control grant program where federal money is spent to remove lead from homes.
During his 36 years at Johns Hopkins as a neurosurgeon, Carson says he spent a lot of time treating young kids affected by lead poisoning.
“You get them well again and you send them into an environment that is not healthy. That use to trouble me quite a bit," said Carson.
Carson toured two homes, one of them belonging to Linda Herndon.
Herndon has grandchildren and didn't know the paint used on her windows was lead-based. Workers with the program came to her house and replaced all her windows.
"I thank the whole program, I am so appreciative. I am so grateful because they turned my house into a home," said Herndon.
Carson has also met with the mayor and local HUD officials.
