The Department of Health and Human Services and the USDA released an update on nutrition guidelines.

The new guidelines want you to cut back on sugar and eat more vegetables. No more than 10 percent of your daily calories should include artificial sugars. Be mindful, this does not include natural sugars that occur in fruits, just artificial sweeteners.

The guidelines suggest cutting salt and saturated fat, but doesn't specifically recommend eating less red or processed meat.

Courtney Ferreira is a nutritionist and registered dietician at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She joined ABC2's In Focus to clarify the new guidelines.
