Tips on recovering from the flu

BALTIMORE - People who have had the flu say it's like being hit by a truck.

It leaves you feeling run down, achy, and miserable.

If you get a really bad case of the flu, it could land you in bed for a week. But don't try to fight it, your body needs the extra rest to recover.

  • Getting plenty of sleep is one of the best ways to get over the flu. It's your body's way of repairing and recharging what's happened to your immune system.
  • Drink lots of water. That helps replenish your fluids and keeps you from getting dehydrated.

Your body has to be hydrated to function properly. You can also drink juice but stay away from soda and other caffeinated drinks.

  • And taking over-the-counter pain medications can help relieve fever and body aches.
  • If the flu lasts longer than a week or you're dealing with any other complications, don't hesitate to call your doctor.
