When the first school bell of the year rang yesterday -- hundreds of chairs in one California district sat empty.

But it could have been worse. Just last week it looked like a thousand students in Oakland, California would miss the first day.

Kids are being kept out of the classroom there because they aren't up-to-date on their vaccinations.

For the first time, students in Oakland's unified school district are required to meet the states new immunization guidelines -- no exceptions.

In years past, parents with personal and religious beliefs against vaccines could opt out.

School administrators are now scrambling to get all their students in compliance -- even partnering with clinics to give out the vaccinations.

Otherwise, the district could lose state funding.
