We've seen the devastating effects of teen bullying, the worst outcome being suicide. A new study links several types of abuse to suicidal thoughts in children. And believe it or not, bullying is not the worst.
Researchers surveyed 10 to 17-year-olds in 2008 and then again in 2010.
They found that kids who were bullied within the last year had double the odds of suicidal thoughts. Sexual assault more than tripled their chances. Physical and emotional abuse by their parents had the greatest impact on teens. Their thoughts of suicide more than quadrupled when that happened.
The study was published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
