NEW YORK - Coke and Pepsi are chasing the sweet spot: a soda with no calories, no artificial sweeteners and no funny aftertaste.
The world's top soft drink companies hope it will help silence health concerns about soda and reverse a decline in consumption of carbonated drinks. A solution is likely still years away.
The main ingredient that helps soda taste good is high-fructose corn syrup, which also adds on pounds. Asparatame and other artificial sweeteners are considered too fake tasting, and companies haven't figured out how to mask the metallic aftertaste of natural sweeteners harvested from plants.
