As the debate continues across the country about the legalization of marijuana, a new study shows being a heavy cannabis user could lead to a shorter life.

According to research from the American Journal of Psychiatry, people who are heavy marijuana users in their teen years are 40% more likely to die by age 60.

The study observed 45,000 men in Sweden who participated in mandatory military training from 1969-1970 and followed them on the National Cause of Death Register until 2011. In that timeframe, about 4,000 men died.

The study also found heavy pot users are more likely to commit suicide or die from accidental injuries.
