Governor Larry Hogan declared April 24-30 Zika Virus Awareness Week in Maryland.

He said it's a time for residents to take simple, but important steps to prevent the spread of Zika carrying mosquitoes. He said in a statement that Maryland residents should survey their properties for mosquito breeding sites.

"As we learn more about the serious health risks associated with Zika, it is crucial that Marylanders - especially those who are traveling to areas where the virus is being actively transmitted - are equipped with knowledge that will help reduce their chances of contracting the virus," Governor Hogan said.

As of March 31, 2016 there have been eight confirmed cases of Zika virus in Maryland. All of the cases have been associated with travel to areas where the disease is prevalent.

The best way to avoid the Zika virus is to prevent mosquito bites. Eliminating breeding sites will decrease the number of mosquito eggs laid. Also, use these tips to prevent skin exposure to mosquitoes.

  • Wear long, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
  • Apply insect repellents according to product labels
  • Avoid mosquito-infested areas during prime periods of activity (early and late in the day and at night in well-lit areas)
  • Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens in homes and stables
