Energy drinks linked to rise in emergency room visits

More people are ending up in the emergency room after drinking energy drinks.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says between 2005 and 2009, emergency room visits rose sharply.

They climbed from just over 1,100, to 13,000 visits.

About 44 percent of the visits came after people mixed the drinks with alcohol or drugs.

The beverage industry says the figures are taken out of context and that energy drinks are safe.
