Kids in Baltimore City and Baltimore County are feeling the effects of the heat.

More than 60 schools in the city will dismiss early on Wednesday and ten in the county will be closed because of a lack of air conditioning.

As the parents and kids continue to wait for the green light to learn without risking their health-- city school leaders sending out a message.

In a statement from Baltimore City Schools, they said they have the most outdated building portfolio in the state that needs $3 billion to fix.

Part of that money for around 60 buildings without working air conditioning.

The statement reads that there is a five-year plan in place to put air conditioning in all the buildings in the district.

A plan that doesn’t help the already too hot to start 2018.

“They had a whole summer to put air conditioning in school,” said Andrew Coleman a Sophomore at Baltimore City College. “They were here working on stuff and not putting air conditioning in schools and that’s pretty bad. When the teacher is saying you might have a half day for the whole week that’s bad.”

Under district guidelines city schools with interior temperatures of 85 degrees or higher must close.

Schools without air conditioning can't be open if the outside heat index reaches 100 degrees by 10:30 in the morning.

When schools close early all students will get lunch before being dismissed and recreation centers will be opened for the students.

“Us students deserve to be invested in not through vouchers but through our public schools,” said Olivia Koulish a Baltimore City College Sophomore.

Thousands of parents, children. and teachers being held hostage by the rising temperatures outside and the lack of resource inside.
