Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh is expected to testify in favor of legislation that would make the mayor responsible for appointing commissioners to the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners.

Currently, the governor makes those appointments.

The bill calls for the Mayor to have sole discretion to appoint and remove members of the board. Pugh originally introduced the bill when she served in the Maryland Senate.

This measure would also establish the Baltimore City Public School Board Community Panel to gather input on education from residents.

Pugh will testify in front of the Maryland Senate Committee on Education at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Senate Office Building in Annapolis. She will then testify before the Maryland House of Delegates in support of the companion bill.
