Maryland falls to second in College Board's 2016 ranking of percentage of high school students to pass an Advanced Placement exam.

This ends Maryland's decade-long reign leading the nation in this category.

In the state, 30.4 percent of high school graduates scored a three or higher on the college-level exams.

AP exams are graded on a scale of one to five. Students must score a three or higher to pass the exam.

Massachusetts now leads the nation, with 31 percent of graduates earning a passing AP score.

The national average is 21.9 percent.

Mississippi ranks last on the list, with only 5.9 percent of graduates in the state having passed an AP exam.
