A study finds that international enrollment at U.S. colleges has fared better than expected this year amid concerns that Trump administration policies might deter students coming from abroad.
The Institute of International Education says its survey of 500 schools found a 7% drop in the number of new students coming from abroad this fall.
The nonprofit's head of research says it's a "wake-up call" for colleges, but is nowhere near the doomsday scenarios some had predicted.
Many colleges have been bracing for steep declines amid fears that the White House's travel ban proposals and separate reports of violence against immigrants would discourage students considering schools in the U.S.
Still, the survey found that half the colleges surveyed worry that the nation's political climate could deter students from coming here.
