A coalition dedicated to improving the quality of life for sexual and gender minorities throughout Maryland will hold a rally Tuesday in support of LGBTQ students.

The rally is in response to the Trump administration's decision to remove federal guidelines pertaining to transgender students' ability to use the bathroom aligning with their gender identity.

The coalition is made up of several organizations including: GLSEN Baltimore, Baltimore Transgender Alliance, GLCCB, Hearts and Ears, Sistas ofthe T, Black Transmen Inc., Star Track, Center for Black Equity, Youth Against Oppression, PunkOut, FreeState Justice and FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture.

They believe the decision has the potential to place trans-students at risk physically and mentally.

During the rally, the coalition will present a list of demands to Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Sonja Santelises and school board officials.

The demands are:

  • Sonja Santelises and BCPSS release a statement upholding the guidance from the
    Maryland State Department of Education
  • All middle and high schools identify an adult LGBTQ ally who has contact with the
Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, receives training on basic interventions

  • All school staff receives training from GLSEN on transgender and other gender and
sexual minority student centered cultural competency
