One Ben Franklin High School student thought she was spending another typical Monday in class.

Little did Julia Wingard know, her mom and staff at Stevenson University planned a surprise that would change her life.

While sitting in class, a group of people walked in and addressed Wingard: “We’re here today to let you know you are one of our Presidential Fellows at Stevenson University.”

Wingard’s mom, who is unemployed, was there to cheer on her daughter’s accomplishment. She will be the first in her family to go to college.

Wingard is the first Baltimore City Public School student to be honored with Stevenson University’s Presidential Fellowship. She also earned the highest SAT score at Ben Franklin and is one of four students in the school’s history to pass the AP Government exam. Wingard is one of 10 recipients of the scholarship.

"Julia impressed us all throughout the process of this scholarship program,” said Kelly Farmer with Stevenson University. “She's an excellent student and community member. She's overcome some great challenges in her life and we're thrilled to welcome her to Stevenson."
