Baltimore County’s gifted and talented program could soon operate under the new name, “advanced academics.”

The county’s Board of Education is set to vote on a measure Tuesday that would rename the program in order to align with current research and to “ensure equity in access to advanced students,” according to the board’s meeting agenda.

Board documents site similar changes in other Maryland counties adopted to widen access to advanced learning.
The school board states that it’s committed to ensuring “equity and excellence in education” by recognizing and nurturing all students’ potential regardless of factors including race, gender and socio-economic status.

The hearing is scheduled Tuesday.

School board officials couldn't be reached for comment.
