A Montgomery County elementary school teacher has been charged with having sexual contact with two students.

John Vigna, 49, was a third grade teacher at Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring before he turned himself in.

Vigna was served an arrest warrant on June 27, and charged with one count of sexual abuse of a minor and four counts of third-degree sexual offense for the first victim. He was also charged with one count of sexual abuse of a minor and one count of third-degree sexual offense for the second victim.

The sexual harassment began in August 2014 and continued into February 2016 for the first student. Police said Vigna began abusing the second girl that month.

Vigna was originally placed on administrative leave by the Montgomery County School system in February and remained on leave for the remainder of the school year before he turned himself in to police.

Detectives are requesting that parents of students who had Vigna as a teacher talk to their children about their interactions with him and contact detectives at 240-773-5400 if they believe their child was victimized.
