GREENBELT, Md. - A Capitol Heights man is sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for prostituting a 13-year-old girl in exchange for alcohol and drugs, according to a release from the U.S Attorney's office.
Daniel Burton, 30, was sentenced to 262 months in prison followed by a lifetime supervised release. He will also have to register as a sex offender.
"This is an egregious case because the 'prostitute' was a 13- year-old child," said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein in a statement. "The lengthy sentence should send a powerful message that sex trafficking of children will not be tolerated in Maryland."
Burton recruited the 13-year-old girl in March 2008. Burton acted as the girl's pimp: taking photos of her in lingerie and driving her to hotels to have sex with men.
According to the release, the girl had sex with "many" clients that responded to ads posted on Craigslist by Burton.
Burton kept all of the money from the girl's encounters, in exchange for alcohol, marijuana and ecstasy.
Police first keyed into Burton's scheme on April 1, 2008. Officers responded to a complaint about Burton and the girl at a hotel. Burton told police the girl was a relative, although officers arranged for the girl to be returned home.
Burton persisted and picked up the girl at her home and continued to prostitute her.
"On April 8, 2008, law enforcement saw a Craigslist ad for the girl's sexual services and arranged a ‘date.' Law enforcement arrived at the hotel and arrested Burton who was sitting outside," the release states.
The case was investigated by the FBI-led Maryland Child Exploitation Task Force
