Trial set to begin for man accused of shooting Howard County police officer

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday in the trial of the man who allegedly shot a Howard County police officer last October.

Stephon Prather is accused of shooting Officer Steven Houk , who was critically injured in the incident. Prather was indicted on multiple counts of attempted first and second-degree murder, assault and additional charges.

Prather was captured and arrested following an approximately 16-hour manhunt after the shooting in the Laurel area.

Houk was shot when he and other officers responded to the 9500 block of Washington Boulevard in Laurel just after 4 p.m. on call from a business owner who said they saw a man with a gun.

Three officers responded and confronted Prather, who immediately opened fire on the officers, and struck Houk. The suspect ran into the nearby wooded area.

Houk joined the department in 2011, according to police
