ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Howard County police arrested nine people during a sobriety checkpoint late Friday night in Ellicott City.
The checkpoint on westbound US Route 40 and Governors Run Way, resulted in seven drunk driving arrests. Two of these arrested drivers were also charged with a related drug violation and for driving without a license. An additional driver was arrested for a drug violation and the ninth arrest involved an unlicensed driver.
A total of 950 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which was staffed by Howard County police officers and the Maryland State Police. Representatives of of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) were also on hand. Drivers who passed through the checkpoint were given an informational handout containing DUI facts and statistics.
Police remind citizens to always designate a sober driver or refrain from drinking alcohol if they will be driving. If you see a suspected drunken driver on the road, call 911.
