A Howard County Police officer shot a wanted suspect in Clarksville Friday morning.
The officer was called to the 7200 block of Fawn Crossing Drive around 3:15 a.m. after a resident reported an unknown suspicious vehicle parked in his driveway. The officer arrived to find the car unoccupied and called for a tow truck.
Just over an hour later, the officer saw a man walking down the street toward the car. The man told police the vehicle belonged to him.
The officer discovered the 38-year-old man from Prince George's County, Tremayne Middleton Dorsey, had an open arrest warrant related to an auto theft case. Police said the man then jumped into his car and drove directly at the officer, who fired one shot, hitting the suspect.
"He drove directly toward the officer forcing her to fire her weapon. She did that one time so that she could stop the threat," Sherry Llewellyn, with the department, said.
The driver is currently in critical but stable condition at Shock Trauma. The officer, a 10-year veteran, wasn’t injured.
Police aren’t sure why the man was in the Clarksville neighborhood at the time.
"What's so unusual in this case is that we had a vehicle in the middle of the night parked in the driveway of the residence. The driver was from Prince George's County with no known connections, immediately, to Clarksville or Howard County." Llewellyn said.
The incident is under investigation.
