ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - An off-duty Howard County police officer was charged overnight with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Austin George was stopped around 2:20 a.m. Friday in Ellicott City while driving his personal vehicle, according to Howard County police.
Police said an officer noticed the vehicle drifting on Rogers Avenue near Route 40.
The officer approached the car and additional officers arrived before charging George with driving under the influence.
"We recognize the dangers of impaired driving and focus many efforts on combating this problem. We hold our officers to the same expectations that we do of the community," said Police Chief William McMahon in a statement.
George is a 2-year veteran of the Howard County Police Department and has been suspended with pay.
