A man is in critical condition after police say he was involved in two hit-and-runs minutes before his car flipped into a pond.

Brendan N. Langhauser, 38, was driving in Ellicott City when police say he hit a car on I-70 and Route 29 before exiting onto Route 100. After he exited to Route 100, Langhauser hit a guardrail and flipped into a pond near Executive Park Drive.

Police say Langhauser first hit a Ford SUV driven by a 75-year-old woman. Witnesses say they saw him drive into the southbound lane and hit the Ford. The second hit-and-run was reported only moments later on Route 29 where Langhauser's car sideswiped a Ford van traveling in the adjacent lane.

In both hit-and-run's there was only one person in the car at the time and neither of them was injured.

Soon after hitting the Ford van, witnesses say Langhauser drifted to the right side of the road, hitting the guardrail and going into the pond. Officers and a water rescue team were able to pull Langhauser from the car and took him to Howard County General Hospital. He was later taken to Shock Trauma.

Police believe speeding was a factor and are investigating to see if Langhauser was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
